Charles Ash Way was born 29 December 1897, in Embreeville, Pennsylvania, and played football on the undefeated 1915 East Downingtown High School team, making 32 of the season's 33 touchdowns. Charley Way entered Penn State in 1916, and played football that year as a walk on. He left to serve in the Army during World War I and returned in 1919, playing on both the varsity track and football teams.
